Senior Care

LISTENING WITH OUR HEARTS, HEALING WITH OUR HANDS

Cats become senior citizens on completing 10 years and enter the geriatric phase after 15 years.

Giant and large breed Dogs are considered senior between 6-8 years of age and geriatric once over 9 years old.. The large and giant canine breeds achieve senior citizenship earlier due to their generally relatively shorter life spans. Our small and medium breed dogs become seniors between 7 and 10 years and enter the geriatric period after 11 years of age. Different breeds are predisposed to developing different conditions – Chronic Kidney Disease, Degenerative Joint Disease, Glaucoma, Cataracts, Hyperthyroidism, Hypertension, to name just a few.

As a result of improved health care for our pets, they are living longer, better lives. In order to ensure that they continue to do so, our caring, professional staff at Buena Vista Road Animal Hospital is trained to identify chronic conditions and provide appropriate management for your pets as they progress through their golden years. We strive to provide the best possible care that conforms to the most current standards of practice established in veterinary medicine.

We recommend biannual physical examinations as aging in cats and dogs is an accelerated process. We also recommend an annual basic blood work and urine examination (urinalysis), the results of which, serve as a baseline for future monitoring and to help detect imminent conditions. We monitor eye pressure (intraocular pressure or IOP) and blood pressure either once or twice a year, or more frequently, depending on the individual patient.

Please contact us for any questions that you might have, concerning your pet and speak with one of our knowledgeable staff members. It would be our privilege to help you.
